BHS Academic Decathlon brings home first

The BHS Academic Decathlon team brought home the State Small School first place trophy from the competition in El Paso on Feb. 25 & 26. The team also placed second overall in the Super Quiz Competition. The students earned $20,300 in scholarship money. The following students were ranked in the top ten students in the State overall: Mathew Houser, first in Varsity; Zachary Nordquist, second in Varsity; Joshua Ellingson, second in Scholastic; Lane Hadley, fourth in Varsity; Blake Kromer, sixth in Honors; and Kalee Schoonmaker, seventh in Honors. Also competing were Maddie Brzezinski, Jeanine Dorrough, and David Guzman.
The team earned the following medals: Blake Kromer, Silver in Music and Bronze in Science; Jeanine Dorrough, Silver in Interview; Joshua Ellingson, Silver in Language and Literature, Gold in Mathematics, Silver in Music, Gold in Economics, Gold in Science and Bronze in Social Science; Mathew Houser, Gold in Language and Literature, Silver in Music, Gold in Economics, Gold in Science, Bronze in Art, Gold in So-cial Science and Gold in Essay; Lane Hadley, Bronze in Science and Silver in Social Science; and Zachary Nordquist, Gold in Math Bronze in Economics, Gold in Science, Gold in Art, Bronze in Speech and Silver in Interview.
“I am exceptionally proud of the team and all the hard work they put into this competition. This has been a great group of students to coach,” state sponsor Dan Zavorka.
