Keeping Up with Medina Matters
by Bev Barr
April MCL book club selection suitable for most ages; a good Spring Break read
When the Taliban took over the capital of Afghanistan in 1996, day-to-day life in Kabul changed dramatically. Whatever plans ordinary people may have had for their future came to a screeching halt. Women were prohibited from attending school, as students or teachers. In fact, they were not allowed to work at all. And overnight, women who were used to wearing stylish clothes were forced to wear the traditional burqa, to see and experience the world through a tiny rectangular window around the eyes.
In the midst of this violent political and cultural crisis, one young woman started a business right under the Taliban’s nose. Setting up shop in her family’s living room, Kamila’s business supported dozens of women and their families in many ways over the next five years. Her resilience, entrepreneurial spirit and courage kept a community of truly marginalized women anchored and alive.
Journalist Gayle Tzemach Lemmon tells the true story of Kamila and her five sisters in a novel-like narrative that is fast paced, thoroughly engaging and informative.
