Out and About ...A time to harvest ... Lost Maples Winery

Glenda and Tom Slaughter, owners of Lost Maples Winery in Vanderpool, invited old and young alike to harvest the beautiful Lenior grape, originally grown to make communion wine. Dozens of people worked together and harvested about 20,000 pounds of grapes before noon last Saturday.

The fountain of youth? At 97-years-young, Keith Brooks was by far the oldest volunteer harvester at Lost Maples Winery last weekend. He and his wife Joyce look forward to the harvest every year.

Laura Connaway harvests grapes like a pro — even though it’s her first year to make it to the annual harvest.

“Start ’em young!” Ami Miears carries her 6-month-old son while harvesting grapes with her husband, Brant Mosty (who built the roads and paths around the property).
