Bandera Bulldog Basketball picked up their first district win when they hosted the Hondo Owls this past Friday night.
The Owls jumped out to an early two point lead by the first quarters. Hondo did not keep this lead for long as Bandera had a huge second quarter in scoring. The ‘Dogs scored 21 points and allowed the Owls 11, bringing the halftime score to 30-22.
The momentum stayed with Bandera to start the second half, scoring 15 points in the third and 14 points in the fourth.
Hondo totaled nine points in the third and eight points in the fourth with a final score of 59-39 in favor of the Bulldogs.
Leading scorers were Ben Shackelford with 13 points and Brandon Chamberlain with 12 points.
This brings the overall record to 8-16 and the district record to 1-3. This game ends the first round of district play.
Earlier in the week on Tuesday, Jan. 24, the Bulldogs traveled to Boerne to take on the Greyhounds.
“Still down two starters, we had a very good start in the first quarter as we scored 16 points, 12 of which were three pointers,” Interim Head Boys Basketball Coach Tyler Wanek said. “Defensively, we was able to hold the high scoring Greyhounds to 13.”
The tables turned quickly as Bandera only scored 6 points and gave up 22 to the Hounds going into halftime.
Down thirteen to begin the second half, the Bulldogs still struggled to slow down Boerne allowing them 23 points in the third. Bandera added ten points to their total, but this was not enough to catch the opposition.
Bandera saw the Greyhounds extend on their lead in the fourth bringing the final score to 72-42.
Leading scorers for Bandera were Landry Kinsel with 11 and Aaron Givens with nine.
The second round of district play started when the Bulldogs took on the Battlin Billies in Fredericksburg. With a bye on Friday, Bandera will host the Canyon Lake Hawks next Tuesday, Feb. 7 at Bulldog stadium.
