State champion track program offers summer camp for all

By Steve Golemon BISD Track Coach

LadyBulldog running mates Alia Henderson and Sandy Clarkin both qualified for the State UIL Track Meet in Austin, where Clarkin won the 800M with a record-setting time.

"To every season there is a time and purpose!" With the end of one season, there is always another season that follows. That is definitely true in the world of athletics and in the development of young student-athletes, regardless of their sports interest; however, it is especially true in the development of distance runners and/or track and field student-athletes, without regard to their chosen event.
The earlier a student-athlete begins training the endurance base and developing correct running form, the better chance that student-athlete has to perform well and become successful later in his or her cross country and/or track career. The same is true for those student-athletes who wish to experience a steady progression in the field events, since the early training needs to be fundamentally correct in their chosen field event. Basically, that is why the Bandera Summer Track and Field Club exists, and why the Bandera Hill Country Summer Track and Field Camp has been in operation for 23 years (First in Llano and now in Bandera).
For student-athletes who are Bandera County residents and who are interested in learning how to improve their running base and running form and/or their field event fundamentals, the Bandera Summer Track and Field Club is an inexpensive way to achieve those goals. Having reduced the 2017 registration fee significantly, a student-athlete, who is interested in cross country and/or track and field can now register for $40 and a second and third immediate family member can now register for $20 each, while additional immediate family members are able to join for free.
For Bandera Summer Track and Field Club student-athletes who are 12 years old and younger, they will be offered a total of seven instructional periods from 5:30 pm – 7:40 pm on Monday, May 29, Tuesday, May 30, Wednesday, May 31, Monday, June 5, Wednesday, June 7, Monday, June 12 and Wednesday, June 14. In addition, the Bandera Summer Track and Field Club will pay the entry fee for 12 and under student-athletes who wish to take advantage of the opportunity to compete in the five 2017 Hill Country Summer Track and Field Meets.
Please note the schedule of those meets, including the site, registration time, and starting time for the field events on summer camp brochures on the Bandera ISD website. At all Hill Country Summer Track and Field Meets, the running events will follow immediately after the conclusion of the field events.
For all Bandera Summer Track and Field Club student-athletes who are 11 years old to 18 years old, they will provided the opportunity to attend the Bandera Hill Country Summer Track and Field Camp from 8:30 am – 4 pm on Friday, June 9 and Saturday, June 10, as well as on Friday, June 23 and Saturday, June 24.
On those same dates, the Bandera Summer Track and Field Club members who are ten years old and younger will have the opportunity to participate in a half day camps, starting at 8:30 am each day and ending after lunch each day (around 1 pm). Instruction at the Bandera Hill Country Summer Track and Field Camp is provided by visiting coaches who have years of experience both as competitors and coaches. Most of the coaches are still actively coaching at the high school level, while others are college coaches or retired coaches who still serve as personal trainers for specific events.
Please keep in mind that the registration cost covers a T-shirt, four lunch time meals, and the cost of securing visiting coaches for all, plus the cost of the entry fees for those who 12 years old and under and participate in the 2017 Hill Country Summer Track and Field Meets.
