Cross Country team builds a solid foundation

By Coach Chris Carter

The Bulldogs Cross Country team competed on Oct.12 at the District 28-4A meet in Hondo. The boys varsity team of Christian McKneely, Axel Vega, Brandon Chafin, Logan Dybowski, Zane Neff, Dakota Utterback, and Dimitri Garcia placed 4th, missing the opportunity to advance to regional competition by a mere 38 points.
This year’s team had one returner from last year’s team that placed third. Of the seven runners on the varsity team, four were in their first year of high school cross country. We have a really young team. We had a lot of new guys come in and really grow up as the season went on. I am really pleased that we ran our best times on the biggest meet. That is all you can ask for as a coach, that your athletes perform their best when they need to.
We had a lot of pr's (personal records) at this meet. It was a fast course and the guys really came out to race and compete. We posted our best team time of the year and had some JV guys run very well. I am excited about what we have begun. The guys took a good step in turning the boys program in the direction we want it to go. It’s up to them now, to put in the work over the offseason, track and summer, so that next season we get a different outcome.
Freshmen Christian McKneely placed 8th with a time of 16:44 and will advance to the region IV-4A meet in Corpus.
I am excited for him (McKneely) to get a chance to continue this season, but also for him to get the experience of coming back and being a leader for us, going into offseason and track. We need a guy to show the others the way. Christian has been one of our top runners all season. He has worked hard and I am happy to see it paying off.
The Junior Varsity boys placed 3rd as a team and were led by an outstanding run by freshmen Bailey Cox. Bailey placed 5th with a time of 18:14.
Bailey is a guy I am hoping comes back next season and establishes himself as one of the top guys, a top runner. He has the ability to do it. His district races demonstrate that.
Our JV really is a group of guys who —with another year of training—will be challenging for spots next year.
